A dash of snow fell overnight, but also the sun came up this morning, which lately has been a bit of a rare thing …. the million dollar view as seen from ridgemont this morning.

.... halloween was a wash out, although that didn’t stop some eager kids … there was so much rain in a 24 hour period, it washed away pretty much all of the snow in town …. however, check out the glorious day that followed ~ the ski hill in it’s glory ….

SUMMER IN FERNIE IS OFFICIALLY OVER !!!!!!!
our first true dump of snow in town
and it dumped !!!

bye bye bike …
October 24th/09
…. shame on me with a 3 month lapse …so much to cover ~ where to begin ?
how about halloween, which is just around the corner …..
happy halloween

trick or treat

There were many a great things happening in Fernie over the summer, which included the Trans Rockies, where George King made a name for himself, riding for a 2nd year in a row !!! My personal local hero !!!!!!! He almost makes me want to do it myself ….. key word, a.l.m.o.s.t. !

Another fabulous time was the Taste of Fernie, where Barney Bental graced us with his presence for the evenings entertainment …. unfortunately it rained near the end, but he brought everyone as close as possible so nobody was rained on ……. it didn’t save people from getting wet, but it proved to create a fabulous ambience !!!

July 18/09
Dinner at Alpine Lodge on Wednesday night … owned by Cam from Yamagoya. It is a ski chalet on the hill, which provides group dinners for 10 or more people. You can try their traditional ” Shabu Shabu” dinner, which is essentially a Japanese fondue. The dinner was fabulous, and the atmosphere was warm, with the front doors from the terrace open, while a warm summer storm rolled through ~ along with a double rainbow to boot !

Island Lake Cookbook Launch!
What a place!!!! …. great food … great wine … great crowd, and one amazing little gem of a cookbook! The launch was last night up at Island Lake Resort. The chefs provided some of their delicacies from the cookbook, paired with amazing wines. It was a huge success, and something all the staff should be very very proud of !!!
The book will be available at Polar Peeks in mid August ~ a perfect Christmas present for those of you that organized ! ( or Amazon.com for those online shoppers )
Here are a few photos from the evening.
July 7th … a magical night !
I went golfing tonight, and while the thunder was cracking overhead, and the rain was threatening, I managed to stay relatively dry for the first 7 holes ~ but then, I had to take cover. These shots are from under the tree …. the rainbow shots are of course after the rain. I never get tired of a good summer storm !!!! ….. enjoy …..
July 6/09
Crazy weather day today …. heavy rain, sunny, heavy rain, sunny …. all through out the day. I tried to capture the darkness of the sky tonight with the sun bursting through … it was gorgeous !!!
From Canada Day, here are some hiking shots taken from Heiko’s new trail on Mt Fernie heading to Island Lake …. As usual, a cold drink never tastes so good than on the terrace at Island Lake !!! It was a glorious sunny day, not too hot, with a nice breeze ….. !!!! Perfect hiking weather !
HAPPY CANADA DAY !
enjoy some down time, with family and friends, rafting, golfing, hiking or bikin’ !
see you at the fireworks !
JUNE 30 /09 … happy almost Canada Day !
My apologies for the 2 month gap in local fun sharing …. it all started with a quick holiday, that went a bit longer than planned ….
scroll down for a couple non- Fernie shots, a couple of recent Fernie shots, and a couple shots of the love of my life ….. sigh, dog love !!!!! Is there anything quite like it ? Sadly, no.
~ thanks for showing me doggy lovin’ spikey ~
… and wherever your spirit is, let it never be far from mine !
missing you !!
APRIL 27/09 ….
One ‘word’ describes things in Fernie lately …… Brrrrrrrrrrrrr !
OK, I actually went for a couple mountain bike rides on the weekend, and it was lovely out ~ but still cold ! There was a bit of snow on the tracks ( Sidewinder wasn’t too bad, and Eric’s was a bit worse ) but over all, it was fun and muddy !
The movie signs have been spread around town today, so look out Hollywood, here we come !!!!!
April 23/09 ….
GULP !!!!!!!!
Hard to imagine that 4 days ago we were drenched in sunshine & heat ! t.r.u.t.h !
This morning fresh snow ~ everything white, with no sign of it slowing down.
What I would like to know is when the weatherman predicts snow during the winter months, we always say “I will believe it when I see it, never trust the weather forecast”. Yet, when snow was forecasted a handful of days ago, everyone believed it, but more importantly, it came to fruition. I am stumped !!!!
Oh well, I will tuck away my pretty pink pedicure for a few more days, bring back my beloved KEEN winter boots, and carry on !!!
over n’ out ……
APRIL 20/09 …. THE END !
That’s a wrap … the ski season on the hill is officially over, and while it was not a banner snow year, the ski hill team managed to keep the snow fabulous right to the bitter end! Skiing on the weekend was gorgeous, and there was a great crowd on both days.
Saturday afternoon was a fabulous “end” to the year, with Spirit of The West ( a beloved Canadian band) playing on the ski hill in the plaza. It was fabulous!!!!! An amazing crowd with everyone from young to old, dancing, sunshine, cold beers, and a great great atmosphere.
It was a very respectful crowd with people just enjoying the live music, and the wonderful weather. The venue with that scenic backdrop was perfect! Kids were dancing together & with their parents, and there were a couple of beer gardens ( it is a ski hill after all ! ). All n’ all it was a very very well done year end salute !!!!!
Lets hope the tradition holds for next year !!
My apologies for no great shots of “Hotdog Day” this year ( which I heard was hot & sunny ) ~ I was busy in Victoria soaking up the usual spring foliage, and having a big love-in with my 3 gorgeous nephews !
April Fools Day !
It is not an April Fools Day joke ~ 20 cm in the last 24 hours & more falling as I write tonight!!!
JOY !
Considering I was pumping up the tires on my bike 2 nights ago, and pedalling Burma Road last week, it makes you realize that the few warm days we have had is only a Spring teaser. Winter is still hanging on.
Enjoy !!!!
March 17/09
Typical March Weather – snow, snow and more snow ( btw ~ it has warmed up ), with the odd spot of sunshine thrown in! It is nothing short of gorgeous up on the hill these days ! Who says the season is over ????
Happy St Patrick’s Day!
March 10/09
Griz Days 2009……the snow finally came thanks to the Griz! We received over 75 cm’s of snow prior to and during our annual winter carnival the “celebration of snow”. Beautiful blue bird days followed and currently in a mid March cold snap (-26)! Skiing is great!
All the best,
Shannon.
